Frequently asked questions

How the forecasts work, what the numbers mean, and how to get the most out of Windmaster. Still stuck? Get in touch.

Getting started

What is Windmaster?+
Windmaster is a wind and wave forecast built for kitesurfers, windsurfers, wingfoilers, and surfers. For hand-picked spots around the world it combines a calibrated multi-model forecast, live wind from nearby stations, real tides, and gear-size guidance — so you can quickly decide whether it's worth heading out.
Is Windmaster free?+
Yes, the core of Windmaster is free: you can browse every spot, the calibrated Masterforecast, and the 16-day outlook without paying or even signing in. A free account adds saved spots and gear-size recommendations. Windmaster Pro is an optional subscription that unlocks every forecast model, the 6-hour live-wind trend, and wind alerts.
Do I need an account?+
No, you can browse spots and forecasts without signing in. A free account lets you save spots, sync them across your devices, and set up a rider profile for gear-size recommendations. Wind alerts and the full multi-model forecast are part of Windmaster Pro.
Is there a mobile app?+
Yes. Windmaster is available as a native iOS app on the App Store. It also works in any mobile browser, where you can add it to your home screen.

Forecasts & accuracy

What is the Masterforecast?+
It's our headline forecast. Instead of showing one raw weather model, we route to the model that performs best for each region and then apply a per-spot calibration learned from real measurements. The result is a number tuned to what actually happens at that spot — not just generic model output.
How accurate are the forecasts?+
We work hard to make them realistic, calibrating against live station data wherever we have it. But wind is local — especially at venturi and thermal spots like Tarifa, where the real wind can run well above or below the models. Treat the forecast as a strong guide, cross-check it against the live wind reading, and use your own judgment on the beach.
Which weather models do you use?+
Forecast data comes from Open-Meteo. On the outlook you can compare GFS, ECMWF, and ICON directly, while the Masterforecast picks and calibrates the best fit per region.
How far ahead does the forecast go, and how often does it update?+
You get a detailed, calibrated 3-day forecast plus a 16-day outlook, and the data refreshes hourly.
What is 'live wind'?+
Where a nearby weather station is available — currently parts of the Netherlands, Spain, and France, with more coming — we show its most recent real-world reading next to the forecast, so you can see what the wind is doing right now.
Why does the live wind sometimes not show?+
Live wind only appears when there's a nearby station with a recent reading. If the closest station is too far away, offline, or its data is stale, we hide the live card rather than show you a number we don't trust.

Spots & features

How do I find a spot?+
Search by name or coordinates from the top of any page, or browse the curated catalog by sport and by the best months to go.
Can I save my spots?+
Yes. With an account you can save spots and reorder them, and your list syncs automatically across every device you sign in to.
What are wind alerts?+
Opt-in push notifications that tell you when one of your saved spots is forecast to hit rideable conditions, matching both wind strength and the right direction, in the countries you've enabled. Wind alerts are part of Windmaster Pro.
Does Windmaster cover surfing?+
Yes. Surf spots surface swell-focused information — wave height, period, and swell direction — with a surf-specific verdict, alongside the wind data the other sports rely on.
My spot isn't listed. Can I still get a forecast?+
We add curated spots continually, but you can also search any location by name or coordinates to pull up a forecast for it.

Windmaster Pro

What is Windmaster Pro?+
Pro is our optional subscription. It unlocks every forecast model (cross-check ECMWF, GFS, and ICON, including ECMWF on the live map), the 6-hour live-wind trend from the nearest station, and wind alerts for your saved spots. The core forecast, the Masterforecast, the 16-day outlook, saved spots, and gear recommendations stay free.
What's free, and what needs Pro?+
Free: browse every spot and forecast, the calibrated Masterforecast, the 16-day outlook, and the live wind reading. With a free account you also get saved spots and gear-size recommendations. Pro adds every forecast model, the 6-hour live-wind trend, and wind alerts.
How much does Pro cost, and is there a free trial?+
Pro comes as a monthly or annual plan, and annual saves the most. New subscribers can start with a 14-day free trial: you won't be charged until it ends, and you can cancel anytime before then. The exact price for your region is always shown on the upgrade screen before you confirm.
How do I cancel?+
In the iOS app your subscription is billed by Apple: cancel anytime in iPhone Settings under your Apple ID, then Subscriptions. On the web, manage or cancel from your Account page. Either way you keep Pro until the end of the period you've already paid for.
I subscribed in the app. Do I get Pro on the web too?+
Yes. Pro follows your account, not the device. Sign in with the same email on the web and your Pro features unlock there too, and the same works the other way around.
How do I restore a purchase?+
On a new device, open the upgrade screen in the iOS app and tap Restore. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID and the same Windmaster account you originally subscribed with.

Account & data

What data do you store about me?+
Only what you give us: your sign-in email, an optional rider profile (gear, body stats, skill, all optional), and the spots you save. If you subscribe to Pro, we also keep your subscription status, never your card number. We don't sell your data or use it for advertising. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
How do I delete my account?+
Sign in, open your Account page, and tap Delete account at the bottom of the Profile section. Deleting your account removes all of your data — profile, saved spots, and settings — immediately and permanently.
How do I reset my password?+
On the sign-in page, choose 'Forgot password' and we'll email you a reset link.
