Kite Club Hatteras is a small, personal IKO school on the canal in Avon, with its own boat and jet-ski support to run guests out to private, knee-to-waist-deep flats. It teaches kite and foil at every level, runs IKO instructor courses and a gear shop, and keeps light-wind days busy with kayak, SUP and e-foil, alongside its own kite-house lodging.

Cape Hatteras is the US East Coast's kite mecca, a thin barrier island where a vast, waist-deep sound sits a few hundred metres from the open Atlantic. The Pamlico Sound flats off Waves, Rodanthe and Salvo are shallow and sandy-bottomed for miles, which makes them arguably the best place in America to learn, while the ocean side serves up wind and waves for stronger riders. The villages are compact and kite-centric, home of REAL Watersports and its famous learn-to-kite camps.

Common questions

When is the best time to learn in Cape Hatteras?

The kite season in Cape Hatteras runs Apr–Nov, and most reliable from Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov. Expect around 15–25 kt, typically the SW thermal / NE fronts.

Is Cape Hatteras good for beginners?

Yes. Cape Hatteras is a beginner-friendly spot, and the schools listed here run courses from your very first lesson.

Do I need to bring my own gear?

No. The 2 schools in Cape Hatteras include equipment in their lessons, and most also rent kites and boards once you can ride independently.

How long does it take to get riding?

Most people need roughly six to twelve hours over three to five days to get up and riding upwind on their own. The schools in Cape Hatteras run this as a structured course rather than one-off sessions.

What should I bring?

Just swimwear and sun protection. The schools provide everything else: kite, board, harness and a wetsuit. The water here runs 15–27°C.

Should I book lessons ahead?

Yes, especially around the Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov peak, when the wind is most reliable and courses fill up. Booking ahead also lets the school match you to the right instructor and conditions.
