Kitesurfing Cape Hatteras: The US East Coast Kite Mecca

2 min read

Cape Hatteras is the US East Coast's kite mecca, a thin ribbon of barrier island where a vast, waist-deep sound lies just a few hundred metres from the open Atlantic. That geography, flat shallow water on one side and ocean waves on the other, makes it arguably the best place in America to learn and a genuine playground for everyone else.

The wind

Hatteras is windy for much of the year, driven by south-west thermals over the warm Pamlico Sound and by stronger nor'easters and frontal systems as the seasons turn. The best windows are spring, roughly April to June, and fall, September to November, with typical days in the 15 to 25 knot range and the odd big frontal blow on top. The sound side stays flat and forgiving whatever the strength, which is the secret to how quickly people progress here.

The spots

The heart of it is the Pamlico Sound behind the villages of Waves, Rodanthe and Salvo, where the water is shallow and sandy-bottomed for miles. This is home to REAL Watersports and the famous learn-to-kite camps, and the kite schools around Waves run their teaching on these flats. When you want more, the ocean side of the same island serves up wind and waves for stronger riders, so you can flat-water freestyle in the morning and ride swell in the afternoon without moving your car far.

When to go

The season runs roughly April to November, with the best conditions in spring (April to June) and fall (September to November). The shallow sound is flat and beginner-friendly year-round, and the ocean side is the wave option. The water is warm in summer and fall but cool in spring, so pack a wetsuit outside high summer.

Before you go

Hatteras is a long drive from the nearest big airports (Norfolk is the closest, around two and a half hours), which is part of what keeps it uncrowded and kite-focused. Base yourself in Waves, Rodanthe or Salvo, close to the flats and the schools, and the kite houses on Cape Hatteras put you right on the sound. Bring a full quiver, since the wind range is wide: a 7, a 9 and a 12 will cover most conditions. It sits among the best flat-water spots to learn.
